    Consecutive integers area 1 apart

    they are

    x, x+1, x+2

    sum is

    x+x+1+x+2=87

    3x+3=87

    minus 3 both sides

    3x=84

    divide both sides by 3

    x=28

    x+1=29

    x+2=30

    the smallest number is 28
