What number should be added to both sides of the equation to complete the square?

x2 + 12x = 11

    given:

    x² + 12x = 11

    perfect square:

    a² + 2ab + b²

    a² = x² ⇒ x * x

    2ab = 12x ⇒ 2 (6) x

    b² = 6² ⇒ 36

    x² + 12x + 36 = 11 + 36

    (x+6) (x+6) = 47

    Both sides must be added with 36.
