Select steps that could be used to solve the equation 1 + 3x = - x + 4.

1. add x, subtract 1, divide by 4

2. add x, subtract 4, divide by 4

3. subtract 3x, subtract 4, divide by 4

5. subtract 1, add x, divide by 4

    Option 1

    adding x cancels the negative x on one side and adds x to 3x. If you subtract 1, the 1 on the side cancels out, and it leaves you with 4x=3. Divide both sides by x to get your answer.
