    Well you need to get y by itself so

    take 3 (y-5) divide by - 3 and it cancels out - 3 and you have to divide the 24 by - 3 which gives you - 8

    so right now you have y-5=-8

    add 5 on both sides

    -5 + 5=0 which cancels that out which leaves y=

    add - 8 and 5 together and you get - 3

    so your answer is y=-3

    First, apply the distributive property:

    -3y+15=24

    Second, subtract 15 to isolate - 3y:

    -3y=9

    Refine:

    3y=-9

    Finally, divide by 3 to get a singular value for y:

    y=-3
