The earth is approximately 8000 miles in diameter. The moon is approximately 2000 miles in diameter. The distance between the two is approximately 240,000 miles. You build a 2 dimensional scale model of the earth and moon. You use a circle with a diameter of 1 inch to model the moon. In your model what is the diameter of the earth in inches? What is the distance between the moon and the earth in inches?

    As given,

Diameter of earth = 8000 miles

Diameter of moon = 2000 miles

    Diameter of earth = 8000 miles=4 * Diameter of moon ... (1)

Distance between earth and moon = 240, 000 miles

As i have build 2 dimensional scale model of the earth and moon.

In this model, diameter of moon = 1 inch

    So, Diameter of earth = 4 * Diameter of moon=4*1=4 inches ... [using 1]

As, for conversion you have written

    1 inches = 2,000 miles⇒ 1 miles=1 inches : 2000

As given, Distance between earth and moon = 240, 000 miles

    = 240,000 : 2,000

    = 120 inches
