At the zoo, there were 3 times as many monkeys as lions. Tom counted a total of 24 monkeys and lions. How many monkeys were there?

    Let x = the lions, so 3times the lions=monkeys

    the 2 added=24

    x+3x=24

    4x=24

    x=6

    so there are 6 lions and 3times6 monkeys. 18 monkeys
