A decimal is really just a form of a fraction with a denominator of 100. So, the first step is to make the denominator of our fraction, 50, equal to 100. We can do that by multiplying it by 2: 50*2=100. But remember, with fractions, what we do to the denominator, we must also do to the numerator (and vice versa). In other words, we need to multiply our numerator, 17, by 2. 17*2=34.
So, we now have an equivalent fraction of 34/100. We can use this to find the decimal, using place values. Let's use an example. If we divide 34 by 10, we get 3.4. If we divide 34 by 100, we get 0.34. Divided by 1,000, we get 0.034. See a pattern? Remember that the fraction bar, /, is another way to say "divided by." So, 34/100, our fraction, really means 34 divided by 100. Remember what we got for that? 0.34.
