So Amy receives 8 sweets, Beth receives 12 sweets and Colin receives 16 sweets

    Step-by-step explanation:

We know that the total number of sweets is 36 and it must be shared out in the 2 : 3 : 4 between Amy, Beth and Colin. So to work out the answer to this question, first of all, we add the ratio's that the total needs to be shared out in so 2 + 3 + 4 = 9, then we divide that by 36 ⇔ 36 : 9 = 4 and finally we know that 1 part = 4 so we can substitute that one part back into the ratio's

    → 1 part = 4 sweets

    → 2 parts = 8 sweets

    → 3 parts = 12 sweets

    → 4 parts = 16 sweets

So Amy receives 8 sweets, Beth receives 12 sweets and Colin receives 16 sweets
