    A = L x W

    A / L = (L x W) / L

    A / L = W

    W = A / L = 108 / 12

    W = 9 inches

    Next, The one inch border reduces the length and the width each by 2 inches, so L and W now equal 10 and 7

    A = L x W = 10 x 7 = 70 sq inches left for painting
