A recipe calls for 2 cups of flour to make 24 cookies. Write and solve a proportion to find how much flour is needed to make 54 cookies.

For the answer to the question above,

when you put it into a proportion it would be 2/24 = x/54

    multiply 2 and 54 which equals 108

and multiply 24 and x which equals 24x

so you have 24x=108 divide 24x by 24 so you have x standing alone but what you do to one side you have to do to the other so divide 108 by 24 and get 4.5 which is 4 1/2 cups of flour.

    So the answer is 2/24 = x/54; x = 4 1/2 cups
