Given 2x+y=7 ... 1
x-y=5 ... 2
put x=5+y in 1
2 (5+y) + y=7
10+2y+y=7
3y=-3
y=-1
x=5+y
=5-1
=4

X=4 because the y cancel out and all your left with is 3x=12 the you divide by 3 and get 4
