Mary had some cookies. she gave 2/9 of them to matthew and ate 1/3 of them. she had 8 cookies left. how many did she have at first?

    2/9 + 3/9 = 5/9. If 4/9 is eight cookies than 5/9 is 10. So, she had a total of 18 cookies to begin with
