So if r=2j-20 then subsitute 2j-20 for r in second equation
2j-20+j=85
add like terms
3j-20=85
add 20 to both sides
3j=105
divide both sides by 3
j=35
subsitute
r+j=85
r+35=85
subtract 35 from both sides
r=50
r=50
j=35

3j/3=105/3
