    40 boys

    Step-by-step explanation:

    Calculating the number of girls?

    we can make use of the ratio and the number of boys.

    give the girls a variable - --x

    use cross multiplication:

    5 : 2

    24 + x : x

    the 24 + x means there are 24 more boys than girls

    5x = 2 (24 + x)

    5x = 48 + 2x

    make x the subject of formula

    5x - 2x = 48

    3x = 48

    x = 16

    the number of girls are 16.

    the number of boys are:

    16 + 24 = 40

    there are 40 boys
