    (1/3) / (1/4) = 1/x ... 1/3 milk to 1/4 water = 1 milk to x water

    cross multiply

    (1/3) (x) = (1/4) (1)

    1/3x = 1/4 ... multiply both sides by 3, eliminating the 1/3 on the left side

    x = 1/4 * 3

    x = 3/4 < = = = 3/4 cups of water are needed for 1 cup of milk
