Steve's scores on exams #1, #2, and #4 are 89,93 and 87 (out of 100). Unfortunately, he chose to skip exam #3. This resulted in a score of 0 for him on Exam #3. If he has to get a passing grade of at least 70% to go on to the next class and he has only Exam #5 left in class, what is the minimum score he needs to get on Exam #5? Assume his grade is calculated using only the 5 exam scores.

    Find x such that the average is equal to 70:

    (89 + 93 + 0 + 87 + x) / 5 = 70

    (269 + x) / 5 = 70

    * multiply both sides by 5

    269 + x = 350

    *subtract 269 from both sides

    x = 81

    Steve must score at least 81 (out of 100) to get a passing grade of 70%
