    Speed they were traveling on the drive home = 50 mph

    Step-by-step explanation:

    Trip to relatives home:

    Speed = 55 mph

    Time taken = 2 1/2 hours = 2.5 hours

    Distance = Speed x Time taken = 55 x 2.5 = 137.5 miles.

    Trip to drive home:

    Time taken = 2 1/2 hours + 15 minutes = 2 3/4 hours = 2.75 hours

    Distance = 137.5 miles.

    Speed = Distance / Time = 137.5/2.75 = 50 mph

    Speed they were traveling on the drive home = 50 mph
