    let x be the number of miles Chang drove

    .79x

    so it goes as this

    $16.99+$.79x=$152.08

    $16.99-$16.99+$.79x=$152.08-$16.99

    $.79x=$135.09

    x=$135.09/.79

    x=171 miles

    152.08-16.99 = 135.09

    135.09 / 0.79 = 171

    He drove 171 miles.

    I subtracted the base fee. And after that I was left with everything from the miles he drove.

    So then I divided the miles by how much he had to pay per mile.
