Let d be the difference between the heights of Sarah and Jessica.

    If Sarah is taller, then d = s - j

    If Jessica is taller, then d = j - s

    So, d = s - j or d = - (s - j)

Hence, d = |s - j|, the absolute value equation which always gives positive result.
