Let the number be x.

(2/3) x = 3 1/2 + (3/8) x

(2/3) x - (3/8) x = 3 1/2

(8*2 - 3*3) / (8*3) x = 7/2

(16 - 9) / 24 x = 7/2

(7/24) x = 7/2

7x/24 = 7/2 Divide both sides by 7

x/24 = 1/2

x = 24*1/2

x = 12

The number is 12.
