    Amanda grew N inches from the height of 48 inches and she is now 56.5 inches.

    So 48+n=56.5

    n=56.5-48

    n=8.5

    n = 56.5 - 48

    You are taking her original height subtracted from her current height to find n, how many inches she grew.
