    Let W stand for width, 7W-16 stand for the length.

    2W + 2 (7W-16) = 48in

    Multiply out the parentheses

    2W + 14W - 32=48in

    Combine like terms

    16W = 80in

    Divide both sides by 16

    W = 5in
