Seven jars hold a total of 250 candies. They are lined up left to right from fullest to emptiest. The left-most jar has 72 candies, and the right-most jar has 13. No two jars hold the same number of candies. What is the positive difference between the greatest number of candies that could be in the second jar from the left, and the least number of candies that could be in that jar?

    To find the greatest possible difference between the second fullest jar and the second least fullest jar, you take 1 less than 72 (71) and 1 more than 13 (14).

    Subtract these two numbers to get the greatest possible difference.

    71-14 = 57
