An equation would look something like 14+9a=86

$14 initial fee plus $9 per hour for a total of $86

So subtract 14 from each side of the equation to leave you 9a=72

Divide each side by 9, leaving x=8

    8 hours

Joan paid for 8 hours of biking rental because 9*8=72 + the original 14 for the bike is 86 dollars.
