Explain why the expression y+y+y and 3y are equivalent?

    Each variable that doesn't have a number in front of it is an invisible 1. Since y, y, and y are like terms because they have the same exponent and variable. Because they are like terms you can add and subtract them. So 1y+1y+1y = 3y
