    x = 1

    Step-by-step explanation:

    (y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1) = m

    (x, 2) ... x1 = x and y1 = 2

    (-5,8) ... x2 = - 5 and y2 = 8

    now sub

    (8 - 2) / (-5 - x) = - 1

    6 / (-5 - x) = - 1 ... multiply both sides by (-5 - x)

    6 = - 1 (-5 - x)

    6 = 5 + x

    6 - 5 = x

    1 = x

    lets check it ...

    (y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1) = - 1

    (8 - 2) / (-5 - 1) = - 1

    6 / - 6 = - 1

    -1 = - 1 (correct) ... so it checks out

    x = 1
