    16 female students and 20 male students

    Step-by-step explanation:

    What we must do is propose a system of 2x2 equations that we can do in the statement,

    If "x" is the number of female students and "y" of male students, then:

    in math class:

    0.625 * x + 0.8 * y = 26

    history class:

    0.875 * x + 0.6 * y = 26

    if we solve for x, we are left with:

    x = (26 - 0.6 * y) / 0.875

    now replacing in the math class equation, we are left with:

    0.625 * (26 - 0.6 * y) / 0.875 + 0.8 * y = 26

    18.57 - 0.43 * y - 0.8 * y = 26

    0.8 * y - 0.43 * y = 26 - 18.57

    0.37 * y = 7.43

    y = 20.08

    now for x:

    x = (26 - 0.6 * 20.08) / 0.875

    x = 15.94

    That is, they are 16 female students and 20 male students
