    first change them into improper fractions

    (2*3) + 1/2 - ->7/2

    (3*1) + 1/2--> 7/3

    7/2-7/3 now find the least common denominator (lcd) it is 6

    2 goes into 6, 3 times, 7*3 = 21--> 21/6

    3 goes into 6, 2 times, 7*2=14 - -> 14/6

    21/6-14/6=7/6
