    The equation is true.

    10x + 5 = 8x + 2

    Subtract 5 from both sides.

    10x = 8x - 3

    Subtract 8x from both sides.

    2x = - 3

    Subtract both sides by 2.

    x = - 1.5

    Because we are able to get a value for x, we know that the equation is true, as we can plug the value of x back into the original equation to verify.

    10 (-1.5) + 5 = 8 (-1.5) + 2

    -15 + 5 = - 12 + 2

    -10 = - 10 √ this equation is true.
