If f (x) = x2 + 2x + 3, what is the average rate of change of f (x) over the interval [-4, 6]?

    The average is given by

    fav = f (a) - f (b) / a-b

    f (-4) = 11

    f (6) = 51

    fav = 51 - 11/-4 - 6 = - 4
