A recipe calls for 2 1/4 cups of sugar. You want to make only 1/3 of the recipe. how much sugar will you need?

    To only make 1/3 of the recipe you would divide all ingredients by 3 or multiply by 1/3, same thing.

    Convert 2 1/4 to single fraction first

    9/4 * 1/3 = 9/12 = 3/4 cup sugar
