    Let Ollie's age be L

    We subtract 8 from L and subtract 16 from 3 times L as well and equate them.

    L - 8 = 3L - 16.

    L - 3L = - 16 + 8

    -2L = 8 - 16

    -2L = - 8 Divide both sides by - 2.

    -2L / - 2 = - 8 / - 2

    L = 4.

    Ollie is 4 years old.
