    lets start off by multiplying each side by 5

    (x-1) = 5 (4x + 2) / 35

    then let's multiply both sides by 35

    35 (x-1) = 5 (4x + 2)

    now let's distribute the coefficients (5 and 35) into everything in the brackets

    35 times x is 35x

    35 rimes 1 is 35

    5 times 4x is 20x

    5 times 2 is 10

    (35x - 35) = (20x + 10)

    we can add 35 to both sides

    35x = 20x + 45

    then subtract 20x on both sides

    15x = 45

    then divide both sides by 15

    x = 3
