J (Joseph) and S (Sam) together total 47. J+S=47. J (Joseph) watched 24 more than S (Sam). J=S+24 Since S+24 has the same value as J, just plug it into to J spot in the first equation (J+S=47) : S+24+S=47 so 2S+24=47 (subtract 24 from both sides) 2S=23 (Divide both sides by 2) S=11.5 Now we can determine J by remembering that J+S=46 so J+11.5=47 (subtract 11.5) J=35.5

Joseph watched 35.5 episodes and Sam watched 11.5
