A thermometer is guaranteed to give a temperature no more than 12 degree Fahrenheit from the actual temperature. If the thermometer reads 28 degree Fahrenheit, write and solve an equation to find the maximum and minimum temperatures it could be.

    So let T be the max and min temperature, and let x be the given temperature in °F.

    T = x+-12

    So for this case the Tmax will be 40°F using the equation above.

    And Tmin being 16°F
