Think of exponents as multiples of that variable. So x^2 is x*x and y^2 is y*y. If you divided x*x by x, you'd get just x. Dividing just subtracts from the total when everything is being multiplied. So for the first term, 24 (x^2) (y) / - 4 (x) (y) is - 6 (x)
