    m1 represents the mass of one of the objects. The formular is Newton's law of universal gravitation which states that a particle with mass, m, attracts every other particle in the universe with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. It was formulated by Isaac Newton in his work Philosophia Naturalis Principia Mathematica published on 5 July 1686.
