If you had 1/3 and 2/4 and wanted to compare them, you would multiply both of the denominators by each other so that they have the same denominator

you would multiply 1/3 by 4 to get 4/12

you would multiply 2/4 by 3 to get 6/12

Now they have the same denominator and you can compare them
