    x=3 and y=5

    Step-by-step explanation:

    simply multiply one of the equations by - 1 so - 1 (x-4y=-17)

    so then 9x-4y=7 plus - x+4y=17 and you eliminate the y variable to get 8x=24

    so x=3 then plug it in to get y

    9 (3) - 4y=7

    27-4y=7

    -4y=-20

    so y=5
