It is asking for a total, or addition, of the ingredient.

To add fractions you need common denominators. You must find the LCD, least common denominator, of 2 and 16.

    LCD of 2 & 16 = 16. Now convert 1/2 into 16ths.

    1/2 = 8/16

    3/16 + 8/16 = 11/16 total cups.

10/16 cups of sugar or 5/8 cups of sugar
