    50=total

    4 times as many red as green

    r=red apples

    g=green apples

    bought 4 times as many r as green

    this means

    r is 4 times of g

    r=4 times g

    r=4g

    total=r+g=50

    r+g=50

    subsitute 4g for r

    4g+g=50

    5g=50

    divide by 5

    g=10

    subsitute

    r=4g

    r=4 (10)

    r=40

    there wer 40 red apples
