    Assuming the shipping crate is a box wide sides = sso the volume of the crate is s^3

    since the new crate is two times the volume so 2s^3then solve the side of the new crate

    x = (2s^3) ^ (1/3) x = 1.26s

    solving the surface area of the new crate

    a = 6x^2a = 6 (1.26s) ^2a = 6 (1.58s^2) so tim and tom should buy 1.58 times the original paint
