Taylor baked a cake to serve after dinner. Suppose she cut the cake into 8 equal size pieces and 6 people ate all the pieces. Explain how they could have divided the pieces so that everyone ate the same amount of cake. You may show your work in a drawing.

    First the 6 people would each have one of the 8 equal size pieces.

    Then each of the 2 pieces left over would be cut into 3 equal size pieces.

    The 6 people would each receive one of these pieces.

    So each person would receive 1 and 1/3 of the original pieces. We can also calculate this by dividing 8 by 6 which is 1 1/3.
