A furniture builder who has been commissioned to custom build some bookcases. He goes and measures the space but only had a meter stick with him. finds that the length is 2 meters, the height is 4 meters and the depth is 50 centimeters.

You are to build the shell of the bookcases. You can only buy lumber in 1 inch by 12 inches by 8 feet though. If each plank costs $18.00 how much will the materials cost the customer?

A) $144.00

B) $198.00

C) $702.00

D) $720.00

    The correct answer is b) $198.00

    You need to convert the inches to feet

    3 inches = 0.25 feet

    Then convert all the feet to yards using the fact that 3 feet = 1 yard

    30 feet = 10 yards

    60 feet = 20 yards

    .25 feet = 112 of a yard.

    Then find the volume that needs to be covered.

    10 x 20 x 112 = 503 cubic yards.

    Since each bag covers 2 cubic yards. You will need 503 x 12 = 8.3 bags or 9 bags
