    8x - 2 = - 5 (2x + 6) ... distribute the - 5 thru the parenthesis

    8x - 2 = - 10x - 30 ... add 10x to both sides

    8x + 10x - 2 = - 30 ... add 2 to both sides

    8x + 10x = - 30 + 2 ... simplify

    18x = - 28 ... divide both sides by 18

    x = - 28/18 which reduces to - 14/9 <==
