At a part your are giving out 8 equal sized pieces. Tom and bob will each get 1 piece of cake. Mary will get 2 pieces of cake and Nancy is getting the remains pieces of cake. What fraction of cake will each person get?

    At a part your are giving out 8 equal sized pieces. If Tom will get 1 piece of cake, the fraction of the cake that Tom gets is 1/8

    If Bob will also get 1 piece of cake, the fraction of the cake that Bob gets is 1/8

    If Mary will get 2 pieces of cake, the fraction of the cake that Mary gets is 2/8 = 1/4

    The remaining cake is 4 pieces. If Nancy is getting the remaining pieces of cake, the fraction of the cake that Nancy gets is 4/8 = 1/2
