One positive number exceeds 4 times another positive number by 3. The product of the two numbers is 351. What are the two numbers?

A) 6 and 9

B) 6 and 24

C) 9 and 39

    Answer C 9 and 39.

    Let a the first and b the second

    a=4b+3

    a*b=351

    ==>b * (4b+3) = 351

    ==>4b²+3b-351=0

    Δ=9+4*4*351=5625=75²

    ==>b = (-3-75) / 8 = - 9.75 = = >a=4 * (-9.75) + 3=-36 (excluded) a>0

    or b = (-3+75) / 8=9 and a=4*9+3=39
