Moe and Larry each need to raise money to go on a trip with their school band. Moe has $40 in savings and earns $20 per week delivering papers. Larry has $70 in savings and earns $10 per week for doing yard work. when will they have the same amount of money? Make sure to define your variable (s).

    So moe=40 + (20 times week) number of weeks is x

    therefor moe=40+20x

    larry=70 + (10 times weeks) weeks = x

    therefor larry=70+10x

    so

    moe=20x+40

    larry=10x+70

    when will they be the same, just set them equal to each other and solve, assuming that the weeks are the same so

    when moe's weeks=larry's weeks AND at the same time moe's money=larry's money is

    20x+40=10x+70

    divide both sides by 10

    2x+4=x+7

    subtrac 4 from both sides

    2x=x+3

    subtract x from both sides

    x=3

    they will have to work 3 weeks for their earnings to be equal

    moe will have earned 100 and larry will have earned 100

    the answer is 3 weeks

    Assume that number of weeks = X

    for Moe 40 + 20X

    for Larry 70 + 10X

    to have the same amount of money, then 40 + 20X = 70 + 10X

    10X = 30

    X = 30/10 = 3 weeks
