Isabella's mother has a garden with a total area of 10 2 3 square feet. She plans her planting season like this: 1 4 of the garden will be used for planting peas.     She will use 2 2/3 sq ft for peas and 8 sq ft for corn.

    (10 2/3) (1/4):

    Make the mixed number an improper fraction; multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator:

    32/3 (1/4)

    Multiply straight across:

    32/12

    12 will go into 32 2 times with 8 left over:

    2 8/12

    8/12 reduces to 2/3:

    2 2/3

    (10 2/3) (3/4)

    32/3 (3/4) [same process as above]

    96/12 = 8
