    3x+5y=43

    x=8+y

    3 (8+y) + 5y=43

    24+3y+5y=43

    8y=19

    y=19/8 = 2.375

    x=8+2.375 = 10.375

    10.375*3=31.125

    5*2.375=11.875

    31.125+11.875 = 43

    10.375 gallons of gas (round to 10.38)

    2.375 gallons of diesel (round to 2.38)
